Waterfalls refer to places where vertical drops of water flow along the course of a river or a stream. Melt water dropping over an ice shelf or a tabular iceberg can also form a waterfall. Waterfalls form important tourist attraction sites. They are formed when rivers are young and have deep and narrow channels. Slow erosion occurs when a stream flows over resistant bedrock while downstream erosion occurs faster. Materials are plucked from the beds of the river as it increases velocity at the edge of bedrock. Erosion capacity is increased by whirlpools while stones and sand are curried through erosion. This results in further curving of the waterfall. With time, streams or rivers become shallower and wider above the water fall as water flows over a rock shelf. Kinetic energy results in creation of a deeper area beneath the water fall. Basically, formation of a water fall is a gradual process that takes some time. However, when formed fully these features offer good sightseeing to tourists. Today, there are many waterfalls in different parts of the world that people go to see while on vacation. They are also used in generating electricity depending on the force of the falling water.
